FOOD-SAVING DRIVE
SPECIAL EFFORT NEXT WEEK
A direct appeal to the people of Christchurch to contribute food coupons and food for the relief of distress overseas will be made by the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee next week. For five days booths will be open at Central points of the city where citizens may lodge coupons on the special saving cards. Actual contributions of food will also be received and arrangements are being made for periodic collections from these depots of goods t * be taken to the central store for packing On Friday there will be depots in suburban shopping centres. In conjunction with the effort, a campaign demonstrating the urgent need for supplies overseas will be made through displays in shop windows of the leading firms. It is hoped to arrange for picture shows of the plight of the people of Europe and a commentary on the situation over a mobile public address system in the streets. It was reported that many wellmeaning people had packed mixed goods into cases for shipment. Great difficulty had been encountered because of the variety of sizes in packages. A request, .was made that goods be left for packing at the central depot where tins of the same size could be packed together, thus saving space. A telegram was received from headquarters advising that the public could be assured of the “certainty and reliability of the recording that attends the surrender of coupons to Post Offices.”
An urgent request will be made to Wellington for information on the procedure to be adopted in saving fats.
