REPORT BY ATTLEE
The Government was studying the Palestine report, and it would consult with the United States Government as soon as possible, said the British Prime Minister (Mr C. R. Attlee) in the House of Commons. He added that the execution of the recommendations would entail heavy immediate long-term commitments. ..Ir Attlee was making this statement following a special Cabinet meeting, which discussed the report and decided thst Mr Attlee should make a statement in the House of Commons so that members could question him. Mr Attlee told members ot the House o Commons that the Government wished to be satisfied that it would not be called on to implement a policy involving it, single-handed, in heavy commitments. It wished to ascertain during a joint examination the extent
to which the United States would be prepared to share the resultant military and financial responsibilities. Commenting on the recommendations for the immediate issue of 100,000 immigration certificates, Mr B-ttlee said that it was clear that it would not be, possible for the Palestine Government to admit so many immigrants until illegal armies were disbanded and surrendered their arms.. Jews and Arabs alike must disarm. Britain regarded it as essentia] that the Jewish Agency should take a positive part in the suppression of these activities. She hoped that both Jewish and Arab leaders would give counsels of patience and restraint. Mr Attlee said that the Government hoped that the report would prove a notable contribution to a solution of the problem of Palestine and the Jews in Europe, both of which it had so much at heart
