AMBERLEY EWE FAIR

A FIRMING SALE TOP GRADE SHEEP SELL WELL The apprehension developing over values at the North Canterbury ewe fairs, due to the. dry season and its effect on pasture, was very much relieved by the useful rain over the week-end. In most districts, according to visitors at yesterday's opening fair at Amberley, a fall of about Ilin, was fairly widespread. This ■ was doubtless a factor in the sound sale, 1 aitnough on an average, last year’s rates weie not reached, particularly for the average grade four-year lines and old sheep. Over the early part of the sale average four-year-olds were down on last year’s rates by about 3s a head, but there was a hardening tendency in the latter half of about Is 6d to 2s. The two-tooths also opened at less than last year’s parity, but these sold more freely as the sale progressed Good four-year-old ewes and the best of the older sheep averaged about Is 6d to 2s less than last year, and two-tooths by Is 6d These estimates allow' for the better conditioned entry that was forward, the favourable spring and summer contributing to this factor. The market as a whole was a sound one, and concluded firmly. The entry totalled approximately 24,000 head—6sl6 two-tooths and 17,500 older sheep—the total being about the same as last year’s. The day was cold, but for a few light drizzles remained fine. The Top Prices Top prices for two-tooths were obtained in the latter half of the sale, R. Little (Cannobielee) secured 44s 6d for a oen of 68 two-tooths, and the estate H. O. D. Meares (Shellrock) and P. A. Inkson (Taunton) 435. for a similar sized pen in the former case and for 138 in the latter. Top price for two-tooths last fair was 43s for a pen of 64, secured by H. O. D Meares for a similar pen of first cross. The next price last year was 425. Four-year-olds yesterday made 34s—for a pen of 413 from R. and J. Little (Seaview), and the first run off of a pen of 200 from S M. Deans (Kilmarnock). This price is a shilling better than the top figure last fair The old sheep did not sell with the same activity as at last fair The best figure was 24s 6d for a pen of 62 from D. S. Mackenzie (Happy Valley). There were a few sales between 20s and 225, but the average secondary sorts fell short of last year’s rates, when old sheep were in especially good demand, top figure being 27s 6d. .Average prices for good average sheep yesterday were from 35s to 39s for two-tooths, 26s to 29s for four-year-olds and 17s to 20s for aged. Values compared with the corresponding fair last year are:—
