♦ SEVERAL MEN SENTENCED AT AUCKLAND (P-A.) AUCKLAND, March 4. It was a very ugly affair and might easily have developed into a serious riot,” said Sub-Inspector Daly in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when five men. who were arrested during the week-end following a disturbance at an amusement park on Saturday night, appeared before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M. Sub-Inspector Daly said the trouble started when the police arrived at the park after a fight had been broken up and contestants taken away by friends. When a constable tried to arrest an airman he was struck by a Maori, and a large crowd gathered, preventing the arrest of the airman. In the trouble. Sergeant Coutts had a hand badly bitten. Several of the men concerned were not arrested until yesterday. One man was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for assaulting a constable and two months for resisting arrest, the terms to be cumulative. Another was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for obstructing a constable. A third was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment for inciting lawlessness, and a fourth was sentenced to six weeks for obstructing .tii*- police. In addition, a young man i was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for obstructing the police.
