NEED TO FEED GERMANY

“MUST BE ABLE TO PAY HER WAY” LONDON, February 11.

Summarising Germany’s position in the world food shortage, Mr John Hynd, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, said that Germany must be able to produce the wherewithal to pay her way, and this could not be accomplished unless the workers who were to produce the goods were kept alive. Twenty-two miles of Channel water would not save Britain if plagues broke out on the Continent. The answer to the question why could not Germany starve, if this would assist in meeting the shortage, was that it would not assist because the cost of the occupation and control of Germany had to be paid by Germany, which must be able to provide herself with resources from the production of goods.
