TROTTING NOTES

Jottings With 149 horses engaged, some excellent racing should be seen at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s greeting on Saturday. Loyal Friend was never pacing smoothly in the Final Handicap. Technique was not’seen at his best after breaking at the start of the Wigram Handicap. Dunmore will be in demand with investors in the Belfast Handicap. W. R. Butt’s pacers, Lucky Loyal and Loyal King, the favourites for the Harewood Handicap, both made mistakes at the start and todk no part in the race afterwards.

Characteristic would need to show a big improvement on last Saturday’s running to be prominent this week. Jack’s Pal looks - well, but he gave a poor display at Addington last Saturday. Change of Luck Ben Doo, which races in the colours of Mr B. Dooley, gave his owner his first success for nearly seven years when he won twice at the Blenheim meeting. An aged gelding by Wrack, he is from Queen's Up, which was bred by C. S. Donald, and is by Jack Potts from Alone, by Wildwood Junior from Navaho, a Rothschild mare.

Lost Ground, Then Won Dandy Grattan, after losing several seconds at the start of the Rangitoto Handicap at Auckland, came home solidly to shade the leader, Rita Grattan, which lead to the mile post in 2min 15sec and the mile and a half in 3min 22sec. Te Taonganui also finished very fast to cut Professional out of third money. Handicapped Himself

On the strength of his winning effort at Forbury, Paddy Potts was well supported in the Strowan Handicap, but the Jack Potts gelding failed to go away correctly at barrier rise and was soon giving away long starts. On his best behaviour, he is a smart pacer and should win good races. Paddy Potts will make his next appearance in the Beach Handicap on Saturday, and he will need to make a smart beginning to keep out of trouble in this large field of 27. Scottish Lady Unlucky Beginning quickly, Ann Scott opened up a break on the field in the Alexandra Handicap field at Auckland to run the first half-mile in Imin ssec and the mile in 2min lOsec. A little further on Kewpie’s Crown, Josie Dell, Worthy Gold, Shadow Son, and Belhall reduced the gap and there was little between this bunch as Ann Scott passed the mile and a half in 3min 17sec. Crossing the top, Kewpie s Crown and Worthy Gold headed the leader, with Belhall handy, while Scottish Lady and Heliopolis were improving their positions. Worthy Gold took charge at the turn for home, and held off a strong challenge from Scottish Lady, which Was disappointed twice when going for an opening. Finished Strongly After drifting slightly in the early part of the Yaldhurst Handicap, Rerewaka gradually worked his way into a good position, and with half a mile to go was following Royal Dale, Lee Berry, and David Dryden. Once into the straight, Rerewaka made a bold bid to Catch David Dryden, but had to accept second money a length behind the winner. The Quite Sure gelding is engaged in the Progressive Handicap and the Autumn Handicap on Saturday, but he will need to win at his first appearance to be correctly assessed in the latter event. Quick Return

Pirouette began best in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes from Snowflake, and the pair were well clear to reach the half-mile in Imin 11 sec. Free Fight, Fitnesse, and Palette were leading the others at this stage. Passing the three furlongs peg. Snowflake ran up to Pirouette with Free Fight doing best of jthe remainder, but he broke badly and Fitnesse and War Glory passed him. Once in line for the judge. Snowflake came away to win easily in 2min 18sec from Pirouette. Five lengths back Fitnesse beat War Glory by half a length for third money. Snowflake was purchased by L. F. Berkett, who drove her, early in the day. She is a level-headed youngster, and won in such an easy manner as to suggest that she will go far. From Reefton In her early races Northern Lass did not stay on very well, but age has benefited her, and she is now showing encouraging form. At the Greymouth meeting on January 3 she finished strongly in second place to Jackie Guy in the Paparoa Handicap, and at her next appearance she finished fourth in the Victoria Handicap of two miles on the second day of the meeting. Brought to Addington for the Canterbury Park meeting, she began well from the 12 yards mark in the Strowan Handicap, and although she had to some extra ground she gave a solid display to finish in third place jto Czardas and Wade Lane. With better luck in the running of the Beach Handicap this week. Northern Lass should go close to winning. Profitable Hobby Sea Born has proved a profitable hobby for Mr C. Johnston this season, starting 13 times for 10 placings and £4935 m stakes. J. Bryce, jun., always had him well placed in the President’s Handicap on Saturday, and after following Happy Man into the straight he responded to his vigorous driving to win by two lengths from Battle Colours. Bred by Mr D. McLeo<|, Mandeville, he is an aged gelding by Arion Axworthy from Fair Wave, which took a record of 2min 48 3-ssec before she was retired to the stud. Fair Wave was a product of Messrs Stevenson and McGrath’s Riversdale stud, and is by Waverley from Fair Lady, by Our Thorpe from Lady Rothsoon, by Harold Rothchild from Too Soon, by The Gpssoon. Won Well

Confidently ridden by G. Withers, Bien Sur followed up his placing at Forbury with a decisive win over Sir Julien in the Advance Handicap on Saturday. After being the early leader, he was challenged by Lucky Gem with half a mile to go, and although the latter actually headed him he stuck to his work in good style to carry on and win by three lengths in 2min 12 2-ssec. An aged gelding by Quite Sure from Trelese, he was last successful. in the Knapdale Trot at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting on March 11, 1944. Should \Go Far

Czardas proved himself to be an exceptionally good four-year-old when he won the Strowan Handicap from Wade Lane. Beginning smartly, he was following Real Nugget, Bonny Bridge, Volterra, and Paperman with three furlongs to go, but once Hooper asked him a question he quickly put the issue beyond doubt. All the progeny of the Author Dillon mare Nanette have won races for O. E. Hooper. Her first winner was Privateer, by Man o’ War, then came Fragment, by Maxegin; Starace, by Nelson Derby; and to Jack Potts she left Knave of Diamonds, Radical, and Czardas. Easy Win

Caudray gave nothing else a chance over the concluding stages of the second division of the Knapdale Trot at Gore on Saturday, when he won by six lengths from Sterling Hall, with the third horse, Oporo, another 10 lengths away. Trained for his breeder, Mr J. Dick, Invercargill, by D. Kerr, Caudray is a four-year-old gelding by Dillon Hall from Mademoiselle, which is oy Rey de Oro from Fair Lady, which also figures in Sea Born’s pddigree. Poor Display Backers of Will Cary, the favourite for the Aviation Handicap, were dismayed when the Quite Sure gelding played up before the start, and then failed to strike his gait when the barriers were released. After his displays at Forbury, where he raced generously against 'the pacers. Will Cary was expected to trot a fast mile and a quarter, and the race was robbed of some interest when he handicapped himself by his antics at the start.
