DRY WEATHER IN NELSON
TOBACCO AND HOP CROPS AFFECTED
(P.A.) NELSON, February 12. The long spell of dry weather is having a marked effect on dairy production and tobacco and hop crops in the Nelson district. Dairy factories report rapidly decreasing supplies, and considerable difficulty is being experienced in maintaining city milk supplies. Although a greatly increased area of tobacco was planted this year, prospects are that the weight of the crop will be less, as the leaf is below normal size. The secretary of the Hopgrowers’ Association said that the hop crop would be the lightest ever harvested, as hops in most areas had failed to set. There were no reserve stocks of hops in New Zealand, and brewers were ready to take the new season’s crop as soon as it had been harvested.
