NEW ZEALAND TITLES TOURNAMENT

CANTERBURY PLAYERS BEATEN

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 7. A large crowd assembled at the Stanley Street courts again to-day to watch exciting matches in the second day’s play of the New Zealand tennis championships, i Several surprise results were recorded, among these being the defeat of the leading Canterbury doubles pair, A. D. Brown and R. G. Pattinson, by two unseeded players, F. H. Renouf and B. O’Connor (Wellington) Pattinson was also unexpectedly beaten in the singles by an unseeded player. In the combined doubles, N. V. Edwards I and Mrs Edwards (Hutt Valley) upset a very strong combination in R. V. Robb and Mrs Robb (Wellington) in straight sets. Considerable interest was taken in the meeting of J. W. Gunn (Auckland) and P. Smith (Northland), the former winning easily in three sets, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0. Miss M. Beverley (Waikato) made her first appearance on the courts to win matches in all three events Miss Beverley is slowly recovering from a severe attack of influenza.
