HERITAGE (INC.)

——♦ • CANTERBURY BRANCH ELECTION OF OFFICERS Pleasure that the scheme for providing for children rendered fatherless by the recent war had spread to the United States of America, was expressed by Mr W. R. Lascelles, president of the Canterbury branch of Heritage (Inc.) at the annual meeting of the organisation last week. The movement had originated in New Zealand, he said, and it was encouraging to see that the idea had spread and found approval overseas. A greater spirit of co-operation was needed, continued Mr Lascelles, for although it had been said that the State provided for children, the State was rather soulless, and Heritage could provide the individual sympathy which was so necessary. The movement had been very successful in New Zealand, continued Mr Lascelles, as at July there were 17 branches, with more than 3000 members in all parts of New Zealand. Mr Lascelles paid tribute to the work done by Mr P. H. Walls, chairman of the publicity committee of the branch. The need for help would increase in the future, said Mr A. J. McEldowney, and it was hoped that-the organisation of the visiting committee would be improved next year. A total of 150 widows, with 252 children. Were registered with the movement, "stated the annual report. .. The financial statement showed that £2438 7s Id was held, as against £704 2s Id last year.
