NEW HOSPITAL LAUNDRY

UNIT COMPLETED

PROCESS OF BUILDING PROGRAMME

_ The new laundry of the Christchurch' Hospital has been completed and will be in operation soon. This is the first section of the building committee's programme to be completed; and gratification was expressed by members of the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday morning. Machinery which is suitable for the new unit is now being transferred from the old laundry. Progress on other construction work was also reported by the building committee. Work at the plastic unit of the Burwood Hospital was expected to be completed before Christmas. The contract of building at the Kaikoura Hospital was progressing slowly. Extensions to the pathological department and alterations to the Essex Home had commenced. Final specifications and quantity surveys for the new theatre block were being made and tenders would be called soon. When the chairman of the board (Mr L. B. Evans) reported on a conference convened by the Canterbury Progress League to discuss the choice of the Cashmere site for a new hospital; 7 Miss Mary McLean asked why, if the board had satisfactory reports on drainage and other features of the Cashmere site, the reports cculd not be published in the newspapers. The public's doubts would then be set at rest and the board would I be saved a lot of trouble. Mr Evans said the newspapers did not have space. He had repeatedly emphasised that the board had average intelligence and competent advisers. Many bores had been made and the site, found capable of holding a hospital.

After several members had reiteraten their satisfaction .with the site, Mr H. A. Bennett said he thought it was time the board sot on with its iob and disregarded outsiders. "I'm prepared to face the next election anyway," he said.
