GOLD AND SHOWERY MONTH The weather during October was mainly cold ana showery, and conditions were unfavourable for growth, states the monthly weather report by the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory. The mean temperature of 49.82 degrees F. was the second lowest on record, and 3.2 degrees F. below the average, while the earth temperatures at one foot, three feet, and five feet were all more than one degree colder than normal. On October 6 there ?L as J- i rosi of 103 degrees, which was the hardest frost recorded for the month since 1929. There was also more rain than usual, continued the report, the 2.50 inches being the greatest amount recorded for the month since 1935. Snow fell in the city on. October. 19 and the following day. The last occasion when snow was.recorded in October was 1932. Readings taken at the observatory during the month were as follows:—Barometer: mean for month, 29.741 in; highest reading (on October 10), 30.181 in; lowest reading (on Oct. 31). 29.301 in. Temperature in shade: mean for month, 49.82deg P.; highest reading (on October 9). 72.8 deg. F.; lowest reading (on October 6). 29.5 deg. F. Temperature exposed: mean minimum on grass, 35.91 deg. F.; lowest reading (on October 6), 21.7 deg. F. Moisture: mean daily amount of cloud (0-10). 6.8: total rainfall, 2.501n; number of winy days, 13: heaviest fall (on October 2). 0.67 in. Earth temperatures: at a depth of one foot, 52.15 deg. F.; at a depth of three feet, 51.72 deg. F.: at a depth of .five feet, 50.03 deg. F. Sunshine: total amount of sunshine, 194.9 hours; mean daily amount, 6\3 hours.
