—-♦ TRAVELLING ALLOWANCES INCREASED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 1. Several provisions that have been sought by education boards and school committees are dealt with in the Education Amending Regulations, 1945, No. 2, which were gazetted to-night. * School committees are empowered to pay half the cost of school telephones out of grants received from the department for incidental expenses. Travelling allowances for members of education boards have been increased from 22s 6d to 255, thus bringing them into line with . the allowances provided for-members of other local bodies. The closing date for the lodging of applications for admission to teachers' training colleges h<ft been altered from October 1 to September 1. This will mean that applicants will have to apply a month earlier in future than in the past One clause in the regulations makes provision for the employment of additional assistant masters on the staffs of primary schools. This, it is stated, 'will provide openings for the employment of returned servicemen who had commenced training as teachers before joining the services and will also lead to a reduction in the size of school classes.
