NO WALKER CUP MATCH NEXT YEAR BRITISH' CHAMPIONSHIP DATES FIXED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 30 The St. Andrew's championship committee, in announcing that the Walker Cup golf match between Britain and the United States would not be played in 1946, said there would be great difficulty in arranging a representative competition because the majority of young men were still under war-time direction: It added that the open golf championship would be played at St. Andrew's from July 1 to July 5, 1946, and the amateur championship at Birkdale, Southport from May 27 to May 31, 1946. Advertisements and Salaries Criticism of advertisements in newspapers in which "applicants have been asked to state their qualifications and also the salary which they require" is expressed in a leading article published in the current issue of the r "Professional Engineer," the official' journal of the Professional Engineers' -Association of New Zealand. "Such ad-| vertisements can only create the impression that the advertiser is conducting a sort of Dutch auction, and will probably take the lowest- bid," says the article. "From the profession's point of view, this form of advertising is obviously undesirable, for not only does it tend to force down the general level of ■ remuneration, but also harms professional status, both by encouraging the engineer to undervalue his worth, and by .causing the appointment to responsible positions of cheaper men not thoroughly competent to do the work." The article .adds that the phrases "salary according to qualifications, ' or "salary up to £x per annum" are all too. common, the latter being frequently Used by the Public Service Commissioner. • i
