WATER SUPPLY FOR FENDALTON
. ♦ £73,000 SCHEME SUGGESTED REHABILITATION WORK A water reticulation scheme for Fen - dalton, estimated to cost £73,000 and Involving a rate of l-3d in the £ on the capita] value in the riding, will be placed as a rehabilitation proposal before the North Canterbury Regional Planning Council by the Waimairi County Council. "Other schemes which will have to be prepared for the same purpose are the Belfast sewerage and water schemes," commented the chairman of the works committee (Cr. W. Laing) at last evening’s meeting of the council. ' “One of the reason's given by petitioners for inclusion in the City Council area is the absence of water for fire fighting and domestic purposes in the Waimairi County,” reported the county engineer (Mr P. J. Alley). “It is possible to provide deep wells in our own area and our own reticulation, and so prevent the continual exclusions coming into force.” The scheme proposed for Fendalton consists of a series of Bin, 6in, and 4in pipes with an Bin ring main connected to the city water supply in Wairarapa road at Bligh’s road, going down Ham road and Clyde - road. A well and pumping station and building would be erected on the council’s, land in Jeffrey’s road. The scheme could be extended to take in portions of Upper Riccarton and Papanui. For a scheme in the Avon riding another well and set of pumps would be necessary. Labour costs on the Fendalton reticulation scheme were estimated at £26.000, and Mr Alley suggested that a £ for £ subsidy on such costs should be sought from the Government. A part of the increased rates to the ratepayers would be offset by a reduction in insurance rates.
