TYKE FACTORY SITE

* Area at Papanui Selected FIRM’S NEGOTIATIONS REPORTED The probability that the factory of the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Company of New Zealand, Ltd., one of the three companies granted licences by the Bureau of Industry to make tyres in the Dominion, will be built on a 25acre site at Langdon's road, Papanui, was indicated by letters to and a discussion at last evening’s meeting of the Waimairi County Council. “While wishing it every success and in no way offering any opposition whatever to the project, this league, on behalf of the residents in the neighbourhood, would be grateful to have the council’s assurance that tpe factory buildings will be well back from the street,” wrote Mr T. A. Gates, president of the Papanui Progress League. “It is taken for granted that gardens, lawns, etc., will be laid down. My league feels that these matters will receive the earnest attention of the council and we trust that the whole venture.will prove a distinct asset to the district.” The chairman (Cr. H. Kitson) said, Mr Gates had appeared to be satisfied after seeing the photographs and being given an explanation of the Firestone Company’s proposals, which were to have a garden front. The factory site, like that of other factories in Papanui, would be made very attractive. “Has the company bought the property?” asked Cr. F. Sisson. Cr. Kitson: Yes —I think so. Cr. Sisson; Will houses for the workers be built on the site? Cr. Kitson: No. The whole property will be used for the factory and recreation facilities for the staff. The company has an option over the property. The Organisation for National Development has no objection to the site being used for the tyre factory, the Christchurch Metropolitan Town Planning Committee being agreeable to the site if it were approved by the council. “They must have accepted my price,” remarked Cr. Sisson. "I put the price on it.” The property over which an option is held by the Firestone Company is owned by Mr Arthur Illingworth and has been used aff an orchard.

TEXTILE FACTORY LARGE BUILDING AT KICCARTON ‘‘An application has been made for a permit and plans deposited for a £20.000 textile factory in the light industrial area in Upper Riccarton,” reported the county engineer (Mr P. J. Alley) to the Waimairi County Council last evening. “The plans are now being checked.” The factory will be built by Felt and Textiles, Ltd., on a block of land in Peer street, off Yaldhurst road, close to the Convent of Mercy.
