CANTERBURY PROVINCE
Sir—ln “The Press” of Tuesday in ‘reply to a correspondent it is stated that an officer of the Lands and Survey Department said that the Canterbury Province extends to the Hurunui river and beyond that is the Nelson Province. This statement is definitely incorrect. Nelson Province occupy the north-west portion of the South Island and does not touch the East Coast. Districts like Cheviot, Culverden, etc., are in Canterbury, not m Nelson—Yours, etc., ONLOOKER. September 18, 1945. [When this letter was referred to the Lands and Survey Department an officer of the department stated that the correspondent’s criticism was incorrect. Canterbury Province, he said, extended only to the Hurunui river; between the Hurunui and the Conway rivers is the south-eastern sea front of Nelson. The officer said that many of the public confused land districts with provinces; the Canterbury land district did, in fact, extend north of the Hurunui river.]
