UPPER RICCARTON TRAM SERVICE

Sir,—When is the Tramway Board I going to wake up and give the Upper j Riccarton ratepayers a fair deal? EnI deavouring to do my share in coi operating with the board's request to i leave town early and avoid congestion at rush periods, I recently caught the 3.30 tram and had to stand until ClarI ence road was reached, where almost ! half the passengers left. As the Clyde road tram is run every 10 minutes, sometimes more often, why are the Upper Riccarton people forced to stand while the Lower Riccarton passengers sit, in many cases even making it impossible for Sockburn passengers even to get standing room. Also, why is not a trailer attached to the 3.30 tram to accommodate the many young children coming from school? Could not something be done to notify .passengers that the 4.35 trailer tram only goes as far as Sockburn?— Yours, etc., (MRS) C. GUY.

September 17, 1945. [Commenting on this letter, the manager of the Christchurch tramways (Mr H. E. Jarman) says: "Three cars, Monday to Thursday, two cars on Fridays, leave the Square at 3,30 for Upper Riccarton; and there is sufficient accommodation, provided the passengers will distribute themselves evenly. The 4.35 p.m. tram does not run a trailer and runs through to the racecourse. There is a special tram that leaves at 4.31 in order to bring in the workers from Wigram, and the crew on this tram is instructed to advise passengers that it only runs to Sockburn. If passengers get oh this tram by mistake they are transferred without additional charge to the 4.35 iram, which is closely behind.”]
