OBITUARY
MR T. Y. WARDROP Mr Thomas Yuille Wardrop, who died recently at his home "Tachbrook,” 66 Innes road, Christchurch, was one of the earliest managers of branches of the Union Bank of Australia in New Zealand. Serving first as manager at Timaru and Wellington, he was transferred as manager to the Christchurch branch in 1896 and remained here for 16 years, living in the old bank residence above the present bank in Hereford street. Mr Wardrop then went to Australia to become acting inspector for New South Wales, later being appointed manager at Sydney. Mr Wardrop’s retirement coincided with the outbreak of the Great War, in which he served as an ambulance driver in France and Italy. Afterwards he returned to Christchurch, where he had lived in retirement since. Mr Wardrop was born at Highbury, New Park, London, and was educated in London. He came to New Zealand at about 18 years of age. He married Miss Ethel Palmer, daughter of Mr Joseph Palmer, who was the first manager of the Union Bank in Christchurch.
