RUGBY FOOTBALL
CANTERBURY UNION
BAD STATE OP PLAYING GROUNDS
"I have refereed games between Buller and Canterbury twice and I have found no difficulty. I do not think that referees are so blind that they cannot distinguish between the red and blue of Buller and the red and black of Canterbury,” said Mr R. W. Biazey at last evening's meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union, when a suggestion was received from the Buller Rugby Union tnat because of a similarity in colours the Canterbury representatives should play in white jerseys in the game at Lancaster Park on July 7. The president (Mr W. Maxwell) said Canterbury did not possess a second set of jerseys, but if Buller wished to play in white there would be no objection. Reporting on behalf of the competitions committee, Mr Blazey said many of the grounds were in a shocking condition, and the committee would have to make an inspection on Friday to decide whether a number of the grounds should be played on. Mr T. W. C. Tothlll, representing the secondary schools, said that 20 of the 45 grounds set aside for secondary schools football were unfit for play, and all Rug\?y football and hockey games arranged for to-day (Wednesday) had been postponed. It was decided to write to the Christchurch Domains Board drawing attention to the condition of several grounds and asking the board to attend to drains which, if in order, would take away much of the water lying on the grounds. The following selectors were appointed; second grade, Messrs N. Stowe, H. C. Vincent, and M. Brown; third grade, Messrs W, Lodge, D. Hooper, and W. Kerr. Members of the Rugby Past Players’ Federation were invited to attend' the Canterbury-Otago representative match on September 22. In answer to a request from the New Zealand Rugby Union asking for the names of five referees to officiate In representative matches, it was decided to forward the‘names of Messrs 11. T. Coulter, C. G. Crawford, W. J. Brown. L. Walsh, and D. F. Johnson. DRAW FOR SATURDAY (Unless otherwise stated all games commence at 3 p.m.) First Grade.—Harewood v. Wigram, L.P. oval; Lin v. ASSOCIATION CODE
Concern was expressed at last evening’s meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Football Association over the state of grounds as a result of the continued wet weather. One referee had postponed a game last Saturday as the field was “a sea of mud," and the outlines were not plainly enough marked. Complaints were received from another club about the state of the ground at Bromley Park. Tile ground was not marked out, there were no goal-posts, and in places the grass was a foot high. On the suggestion of the referee, a friendly game had been played on an adjoining Rugby field. . „ , Draw for Saturday , Following Is the draw for Saturday/ games;— „ , Senior, 2.45 p.m.—Nom v. NO INTER-ISLAND MATCH (P A ) WELLINGTON, June 26. Because of difficulties over travel arrangements, the council of the New Zealand Football Association to-night decided to hold over the North v. South Island match till next season. Reference was made to the lack of co-operation by associations, Wellington being the only one willing to undertake financial responsibility. and also to the late start of English Football Association trophy matches as factors contributing to the council's decision. It was reported that 18 entiles so far had been received f»r the Chathaih Cup competition, nine from Wellington, seven from Canterbury, one from Otago, and one from South Auckland. Regret was expressed that the Auckland Association, while agreeing to call for entries, had decided to refuse leave from the Auckland competition to teams taking part la (he Chatham Cup, , i
