OBITUARY

— ♦ — MR G. N. ORMANDY The death occurred recently of Mr G. N. Ormandy, one, of the best known schoolmasters in Canterbury, and an outstanding footballer in a period when play in Canterbury was of a very high standard. Mr Ormandy was for 41 years in the service of the Canterbury Education Board, and did not have a day’s sick leave. As a pupil teacher, Mr Ormandy joined the staff of the East Christchurch School on February 1, 1894, and for a period was a student at the Normal Training School. From then on he served at Onuku, Lowcliffe, and Ashburton, until March 24, 1901, when he was appointed assistant master at Ashburton. In later years he was at Sydenham, East Christchurch, Papanui, Cheviot (then known as McKenzie), Linwood, Elmwood, Waimataitai (Timaru), Elmwood for the second time, and Linwood .North. On July 1, 1926, Mr Ormandy was appointed headmaster at the Riccarton School, and on August 1, 1928, he took over control of the Linwood Avenue School, a position he held until his retirement In 1935. As a member of the Linwood Rugby Football Club Mr Ormandy played his best football from 1896 to 1905. and in representative football was associated with such great playesr as B. J. Fanning, P, J. Burns. G. D.'Gray. and J. T. Weston.' Mr Ormandy was a very sound five-eighths, and as occasion demanded he played useful fboball as a wing forward or in anv position on the field. In Rugby football he represented the province against South Canterbury. Southland, Otago, Taranaki, Walrarapa, Hawke’s Bay. Wellington, Australia, New Zealand Native team, and Manawatu, A man of fine personality, Mr Ormandy did a great deal for primary schools football. He leaves a wife, a son (Mr Eric Ormandy), and one daughter (Miss Alma Ormandy), both of Christchurch.
