FARM HANDS’ WAGES
Sir,—ls it compulsory for a farmer to pay the wages stated under the new award, which I understand are £4 15s a week for a married man and *.a ids for a single man. If so, who would compel him? Is a farmer made familiar with the new award? If so, in what way? I am asking these questions, for in recent editions of "The Press" I have seen farmers applying for workers and offering wages below those Stated in the award.—Yours, etc., _ TTt>T/ _ TTC May 30, 1945. CURIOUS. [The officer in charge of the Department of Labour (Mr S. E. McGregor) advises that wages for farm hands are increased to £3 15s a week, plus board and lodging, as from ApnJ *> I 8*?. H no board and lodging is provided, the wages are increased by £1 a weeK. There is an obligation on the employer to pay these wages. If he fails to do so, a breach of the Agricultural Workers' Extension Order is Committed and he is liable to a penalty on the information of the inspector of factories.]
