AUCKLAND GAS SUPPLY
MEAGRE RESOU&CES OE COAL (RA.) AUCKLAND, June i. Thd Auckland Gas Company is still eking out its meagre supply of coal, and hope§ to give about an hour’s gas service to-morrow. It might be of indifferent quality. The position for the rest of the wCek-ehd was bbsfcure tonight, but it was hoped that further coal would arrive in the morning to ease the position. , There will be no gas for industry next week.
The seriousness of the position was illustrated this afternoon, when, at one stage, the gasworks was completely but of its effective sUpply of coal. All the odd pieces Of Coal that could be foUhd Were raked together, and men were setit into the hoppers to recover any that had lodged in the corners there. rout trucks of coal, amounting to 30 tone, which was the remainder of the consignment from Wellington, arrived, by train ih the evening) and the general manager of, the company - (Mr ft. Wbtley) said it was being eked out to keep the plant in operation. Even with the present restricted gas supply, the City and Devonport works required about 150 ton? a day between them, he said.
