LYTTELTON HARBOUR
Sir,—The Admiralty surveyed Lyttelton harbour a century ago and reported that it was a fine, commodious harbour of easy access, but the anchorage was exposed to an ocean swell that came rolling up the harbour unchecked. Seventy-five years ago the brig Daniel Watson was totally wrecked on the “reef.'’ Ten years later a number of vessels drifted into Gollan’s Bay. The barque Bells was sunk.'others damaged. These mishaps were caused by the lift of the swell, jerking anchors and dragging. I have seen ships anchored off Purau rolling until their lower yards almost touched water. A few years ago an overseas steamer broke away from the wharf and proceeded to sea for safety. The late M. J. Miller, master shipwright, when Harbour Board chaifman. advocated a breakwater in the vicinity of Gollan’s Bay to trap and eliminate this swell. This is essential and the kev to further wharf extension.—Yours, etc., A.W. May 21. 1945.
