HOUSING SHORTAGE
Sir,-The crying need for some resolute. single-minded controlling body to be in absolute charge of house-build-ing daily grows more apparent. Wot houses for speculation and profit and paltry Government promises, but homes going up now to shelter the wives and children of the very men who have made our continued existence possible. Get them up, or there will be dire trouble shortly. Until they are up, it is a mockery to talk about large-scale renovations to the Mount Cook Hermitage, about extensive new clubrooms (with bar) for tne Returned Services’ Association, or to issue permits for costly alterations to tearooms in Colombo street, new layouts for hotels, new garage stations, and so on. Where are our silent, salary-doubled M.P.’s? Remember that material and labour are already gravely scarce.-Yours, etc £ mZEN May 18, 1945,
