TROTTING NOTES

Race Trial At the request of the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, the Combined Trotting Clubs have agreed to arrange a race trial over one and a half miles, in conjunction with their non-total-isator meeting next Saturday. The Trial will be solely for the benefit of horses engaged in the All Aged Stakes at Ashburton on the King’s Birthday, and the handicaps will be identical with those for the Ashburton event. Entries for the Trial close at 5 p.m. next Monday, May 21, with Mr E. G. Mitchell, Secretary of the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, P.O. Box 499, Christchurch. Full particulars of breeding, age, colours, etc., must be supplied. Late entries will not be accepted. —1 From New Brighton After winning at his first two starts this season. Gay Pal missed a place In his next three attempts, but showed a glimpse of his early form when he finished second to Dillondale in the Dominion Handicap at Wellington. He Is a four-year-old by Gaillard from Pearl Bingen, and is trained at New Brighton by G. Cameron. Had Every Chance The aged gelding Auto Lad had every chance in the Haurakl Handicap at the South Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting, but he could not. catch Doctor Ted. By Auto Machine from Nellotta, he is trained by J. Paul at Mangere. Consistent Red Setter is one of the most consistent pacers in commission. She has been in the money in her last eight starts, and that should Influence Investors when the Beaconsfield Trot • at Washdyke comes up for decision. At her last start she stayed on in good style to win the Rakaia Trot at Ashburton in 3min 19 l-ssec from a 3min 38sec mark. Consistency counts, and the Red Shadow mare cannot be left out of calculations this week. Likely Type The Dillon Hall mare, Lou Hall, which has raced at the Washdyke and Ashburton meetings recently, Is a solid type and she may get her expenses for the trip this week. She was favourite for the Rakaia Trot at Ashburton, but tired into fifth place after battling yvlth Maaleesh for the lead most of the way. Solidly Supported After her second placing to Hidden Note in the Army Handicap at Auckland. Dolly Scott was sent out a good favourite for the Fairfield Handicap at Claudelands. but she lost a -winning chance when she went to a break when challenging Rosewaa a short distance from the finish. J. T. Paul has been very patient with this U. Scott mare, which has been in his stable for about three years: and she must have shown some promise for him to persevere with her for so long. Long Spell Sir Raymond, a gelding by Rey de Oro from Yukon, has not raced since he won the View Hill Trot at Ranglora last labour Day. In that race he ran home an easy winner in 3min 28 4-ssec from Forecast and Anazah, which have both won races since then. Sir Raymond races in the interests of Mr E. Honeybone, of Cheviot, who bred both him and his dam, and is trained by R. J. Humphreys at Tempelton. This gelding is above the average. Good Proposition ’Medical Student is the type of pacer owners and trainers dream about. In 16 starts this scasoh Mr V. A. Barker's Quite Sure gelding has been out of the money only twice, and his record now reads three firsts, four seconds, six thirds, and one fourth placing. Probationer, his dam, was well known to Canterbury racegoers, and all her progeny. Oregon, Night Porter, and Poppotunoa, have won races. Probationer was by Wrack from that wonderful producer Our Nurse, -which figures as the dam of some splendid performers In Chevalier. Sure, Salalon, Night Nurse, Sister Polly, and Come Away. More Difficult At Oamarti, Worthy Gold successfully conceded a field of maiden horses 24 yards start, but his task In the Opihi Trot, at Washdyke, where he is again on the 24 yard mark, appears much harder. All these horses have won at least one race, and improvers like Lou Hall, Maaleesh, Sir Raymond, Sunny Nelson, and Gamble King will keep the Gold Bar colt up to his work. Another Placing The Jack Potts mare Professional added another placing to her record when she finished second to Tommy True in the first division of the Matangi Handicap at Claudelands. She Is from Auditress, the dam of a New Zealand Trotting Cup winner In Marlene, and of other winners in Accountant, Audition, and Volterra. Auditress Is by Author Dillon from Millie C, from the Wildwood mare Wildmoor. Came Again ’ „,. . Bill Scott put a break on the field In the early part of the President’s Handicap at Hamilton, but Medical Student, Gallant Maid, and Dunkirk were all with hint over the last half mile.' However, once G. Mitchell gave Bill Scott a reminder the result was never in doubt. The U. Scott gelding was bred at Rlccarton by Mrs W. J. Smith, and Is from Sarella. which left other useful pacers in Rpckclla, Grattanella, Scotty Direct, and Rama Direct. Sarella died in 1939.
