—« — POPPY DAY The -sum of £BS 16s was raised as a result of the Lyttelton Poppy Day appeal held on Thursday., The sum collected last year .was £(J9 17s. Personal Mr S. W. Lane, Lyttejton, was reelected national secretary of the Harbour Employees' Union at the Annual conference of the union at Auckland. Mr S. Thurlow, foreman stevedore of the Union Steam Ship Company at Lyttelton. who Is retiring after more than 30 years’ service with the company, was met by shipping men at Lyttelton recently and presented with a wallet and an umbrella. The presentation wag made by. Captain F. Holmes-Edge, the company s superintendent at Lyttelton. Other speakers were Messrs J. Stanley (Kinsey and Company. Ltd.), O. Guy (New Zealand Shipping Company), T. Bryant (permanent staff of the Union Company), and Captain H A, Brockett (Waterfront Controller). . , Senior-Sergeant D. Wilson, who has been In charge of the police at Lyttelton for the last 12 years, has been notified of his transfer to Oamaru. Tug-of-War Carnival A three-nights tug-of-war carnival was opened in the Drill Hall on Thursday night in aid of patriotic funds. Results were as follows: ‘ Boxing.—J. Gray (Crichton Cobbers) heat R. Cooper (Crichton Cobbers), B. Campion (Crichton > Cobbers) beat C. Brooks (Crichton Cobbers), J. Carter drew with J. Haines (Aranul), M. Walker beat E. Sibley (Aranul), Tug-of-war.—Moloney's middle-weight team (sor) beat Woolston Tanneries (IJin), Mitre (2in) beat Wigram (Uln), Addington Workshops beat Moloney’s (2iln), Addington Workshops (scr) beat Mitre (21n).
