EXHIBITION OF WAR STAMPS

A REMARKABLE DISPLAY An exhibition of war stamps of overseas countries will be opened to (he public in the lounge of the D.I.C, on Monday, April 23, at 2.30 p.m. All 1 the stamps in the exhibition have been made available by the General Post Office, Wellington. Those of overseas countries, including those of enemy and enemy-occupied countries, were received by the Post Office from the Universal Postal Union, which functions in war and peace as a clearing house for international postal matters. “This display is one of unusual interest not only to philatelists, but also to anyone who has followed the fortunes of nations at war,” Sir Joseph Ward told a representative of "The Press” yesterday. “It affords the, first opportunity many people will have had to see the types of stamps used in the Axis-controlled countries of Europe. “From this- exhibition it will be readily seen that -the issues of World War II can easily become a specialist collection in themselves, and subject collectors will find much new material for their collections; such as submarines. dive-bombers, tanks, sinking ships, and even a Russian heroine. The ; profile feature of Heidrich are seen i in a most unusual portrait, and there is even sufficient material for a rogues’ gallery. "Axis propaganda is naturally the keynote of many issues,” continued Sir Joseph, “but the display also skilfully portrays the history of nations fighting for freedom; their vicissitudes and their suffering under Axis domination. TJie sheet of New Zealand stamps, over-printed with the rising sun, forcibly leads one to realise just how fortunate we in New, Zealand i have been,” j The National War Savings Commit- i tee has lent this collection of war stamps to the committee of the Christ- j church Metropolitan Patriotic Zone to j raise funds towards the zone’s 1945 i quota of £170,285.
