ADVANCES BY U.S. ARMIES

Deep Penetrations Of Germany

(R«c 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 8. Armour and infantry of General Patton’s 3rd United States Army smashed heavy counter-attacks north-west of Muhlhausen, knocking out 40 German tanks, says the Associated Press correspondent. American tanks advanced three miles to Schieusingen, 28 miles south of Gotha. The 3rd Army so far has captured 10,600 square miles of Germany and are 213 miles inside the Reich at the deepest penetration. American troops were reported in the Eisleben area, 50 miles east of Muhlhausen, by the German radio on Friday. The announcer said they nad been considerably reinforced by fast air-borne tanks. This put the Americans far beyond the advance reported by 3rd Army correspondents, which was Kirkchheilingen, 10 miles east of Muhlhausen. The British United Press correspondent with the United _ States 7th Army reports that a 36-mile dash by the 10th Armoured Division resulted in the capture of Railsheim, 48 miles from Nuremberg. The United States 9th Army’s advance to south of Hanover , was achieved through the crossing of the Leine river south of Hanover by the 2rd Armoured Division and the reaching of the highway three miles north of Hildesheim. Meanwhile very good progress was made by United States Ist Army infantry in General Hodges’s new drive to the east. Veckerhagen, six miles north of Hammunden was captured against practically no opposition. On the right, other infantry advanced seven miles, also meeting virtually no resistance to 12 miles due east of Cassel and only four south-west of Witzenhausen. Pushing on along the Ham-munden-Nordhnusen main road, the Infantry captured Lubach, less than two niiles from Hedemunden. Armoured forces, still meeting stiff resistance in the north, were three miles west of Trenbelburg on the river Diemel. Bdrgentreigh was cleared by intahtry.. Units of the 3rd Army have captured Eisenach, which was by-passed fay General Patton’s spearheads as tficy swept eastward. The garrisons foughi fanatically.
