A NATIONAL THEATRE
Sir,—"Theatre Qoer" finds "vision for what is new," etc:, in" theatrical production inartistic. The unfamiliar often appears so. An old maxim ior success (financially) is "Choose a play not too : demanding in ideas and produce. jt traditionally." Many producers, including ,Miss Marsh, can be successful on this basis. But a national theatre should do more than stage for such success-7 let it have ? a departmentset aside tor that alone-it. should. test and experi r ment and provide.vitality:and leadership. For that, a producer, who combines skill in traditional methods'with vision for what is new" is a necessity. One may have liked "Aran's; House and "Hamlet" and riot "DistanUPojnt" and "Othello,", or vice yersa. That is unimportant compared with the, fact that they reveal a producer capable, of extremely varied approaches to theatrical production and who is courageous enough to depart from the commdnplace success maxim.--Yours, CARPEDIEM.
