The recommendation of the Adult Education Advisory Committee that Miss C. Hawkins be appointed arts and crafts tutor was approved by Victoria University College last' week. At a recent meeting of the Sunlight League, over which Dr. D. E. Currie presided, a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr Frank Milner, a member of the council of the league, who died a few months ago. The Dominion refresher course of. the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union will be held in Christchurch from May 1 to 4. Fifty delegates from all parts of the Dominion are expected to be present A new film, showing a morning’s work in a kindergarten, is in preparation and will be shown during the refresher course. The resignation of Miss Joyce Morgan as secretary to the Sarah Anne Rhodes. Trust was received at the last meeting of the Victoria College Council. A resolution appreciative of her services was carried unanimously. On January 6 the death occurred at 11 Carlton Mansions, London, W. 14, of Emmeline, wife of Mr Robert C. Winstone, of Hastings. The requiem took place at the Convent of the Assumption, Kensington square, and the interment at Bromnton Cemetery. On January 7 Beatrice May, daughter of the late Mr J. H. Coleman, of Napier, and wife of Mr Stephen Walter, died at Huntly, Aberdeenshire. A group of four from the Christchurch Methodist Churches acted as hosts to men of the armed forces at the Y.M.C.A. yesterday. They provided supper and tea, and also arranged the concert programme for 235 men. Miss N. PilkingtOn, who has been on the staff of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association for many, years, and was lately in charge of Nuffield Kindergarten, has accepted a post as principal of a kindergarten in Hastings. Misstes Lois Williams, Ruth Sincock, Mona Iverach, and June Morgan, who graduated last year, have joined the association’s staff as directors. Miss Iris Orange, the newly-appointed supervisor, is engaged in supervising students and advising directors. , Twenty-three new students this month began their training in kindergarten work. About 700 servicemen were entertained at the Welcome Club during the week-end. On Saturday, afternoon tea and tea were provided and served by Messrs Dalgety and Company, and after the- weekly dance supper was served by members of the Woolston Methodist Guild. Yesterday, afternoon tea, tea, and supper were provided and served by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company, and a concert programme was presented by the Avonia Concert Party, directed by Mr F. Cairney. The engagements are announced in London of Thomas Pitt Cholmondeley Tapper, third officer, A.T.A., son, of the late Mr G. A. U. Tapper, of Christchurch, and Mrs Tapper, of Bucknell, Shropshire, and Margaret Watson, A.T.A., daughter of Mr and Mrs F. I. Watson, of Carshalton, Surrey; also of Flying Officer Thomas Reginald Dion (Charles) Kebbell, R.N.Z.A.F., eldest son of Mr and Mrs R. W. Kebbell, of Winiata, and Meryl Audrey Absalom, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Frederick R. Absalom, of Oxhev Grange, Herts. At a meeting of the committee of the Sunlight League Mrs T. Fleming, of the housing sub-committee, _ was congratulated on her successful distribution of circulars advocating that the houses should be built so as to admit the maximum of sunlight to their living and sleeping rooms. It was reported that in the distribution of these circulars the mayors of the chief cities in New Zealand had agreed to cooperated Dr. E. B. Leilly said the Sunlight" League would have a stall at the Rangiora Health Week exhibition, wnich will open to-morrow. Posters on. sun-bathing and on the fly menace had also been circulated, it was reported; the children’s art competition posters had returned to Christchurch after a successful exhibition in Wellington, and the league’s gardeners had been stimulated by a visit paid to the gardens by Sir Cyril and Lady Newall.
