PIGEON FLYING

RACE FROM HICKS BAY

A long-distance race of 517 miles from Hicks Bay on the East Coast of Auckland, was flown by the East Christchurch Racing Pigeon Club last week. Weather conditions were not favourable and only two birds arrived \at their lofts on the day of liberation. . ~ . „ „ The winner was R. Moore s bird No. 60, which flew the distance. in 14hrs 40min 42sec, and a good second was May and Ball’s No. 5, who averaged 1026 yards a minute. Next in order were the second day’s arrivals in R. Moore’s 161 with an average rate of 408 yds, Nicholson and Wall’s two birds, 409 and 140, which averaged 407 yards and 399 yards a minute. Fast Times Recorded The East Christchurch Club also flew a race from Hastings, a distance of 353 miles 352 yards. There were 32 starters representing nine owners. The rate in yards per minute is as follows; —May and Ball’s 120. 1258 yds; H. Rieper's 59, 1253 yds, M. Hoxman’s 420. 1257 yds; B. Moore’s 164, 1232 yds; A. Wright's 85. 1228 yds; Wells Bros.’s 787. 1215 yds; F. Kingsford’s 1902, 1029 yds; Nicholson and Walls’s 80, 085 yds.
