CIVIC RECEPTION AT : AUCKLAND

VISITOR’S COMMENTS ON

INVASION

(P.A.) AUCKLAND. December 20.

A civic reception was tendered to . ' Lord and Ladv Keyes by the Mayor (Mr J. A. C. Allum) in the Town. Hall,. to-day. The Government was repre-. ■ sen ted by the Minister of Internal Af*. fairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry). Lord Keyes, replying to the welcome. „ said he Was glad to hear reference by Mr Allum to New Zealand’s appreciation of sea power. i He added that he had been on the | beaches of Normandy shortly after the Allied landing. The Germans had good reason for thinking it was impossible to land forces in sufficient strength to push, them back in the way the Allies had done. , They thought the Allies would be -■ pinned to the beaches until the robot ~ bombs had broken the morale of the British people. For that reason, they had reserved the robot bomb attacks for the night of the landing in Normandy, and then they sent them over in vast numbers. The Germans thought the Allies would be forced to attack across the narrow channel to the bomb sites, he continued. They did not break the , British people’s morale, and personally he thought those seven weeks ofx , robot bomb attacks were nothing like... the blitz of 1941. The Germans did not know the Allies’ secret weapon of taking their harbours with them. '
