HOUSING IN SOCKBURN

OVERSEAS PROMOTIONS.—LEFT: Sub-Lieutenant E, C. Baxter, son of Mr and Mrs W. E. Baxter, Waddington, North Canterbury, who recently received his commission in England. RIGHT: Second-Lieuten-ant Pat Butler, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Butler. Doric, Rakaia, who has received his commission while serving with the 4th Field Ambulance in Italy.

♦— — SEWERAGE EXTENSION PROBLEM The extension of the Housing Department’s operations in the Sockburn-Hornby-Riccarton area was discussed by the Christchurch Drainage Board, which last evening received a request from the department asking if the board had any proposal for the extension of the sewerage system. The department, it was stated, was at present proceeding with developments near Hanson’s lane, on the extremity of the board's mains. A number of houses were being erected m Epsom road. Sockburn. Some 25 units in Garvin’s, road previously occupied by the Air Force were being re-estab-lished for residential purposes. Further developments in Sockburn would largely be governed by the possibility of sewer extensions. Mr J. Cullens (engineer to the board) said that a, big job might be .entailed, and much investigation would be needed before a report could be made. The board’s chairman (Mr H. G. Livingstone) said that the area near Sockburn had been zoned by the _ Metropolitan Town Planning Committee as an industrial area, and with settlement a sewerage service would be required. The present service'would then not be adequate. There was still land in the lower reaches of the Heathcote, with a nearer outfall to the sea and to the sewage farm, suitable for industries, where the provision of adequate drains would not be so expensive.
