VICTORY MEMORIAL SCHOOL

PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONY A belief in church primary schools was expressed by Dr. D. E. Hansen,- when speaking at the prize-giving ceremony of the Victory Memorial School,. St. Albans. The schpdl was established in 1922 as a diocesan memorial to the men. who fell in the Great War. Dr. Hansen said that speech cultivation and voice production were an essential part of education. Pleasant speaking was essential to harmonious living and future leadership,' He expressed pleasure at the clarity of diction revealed by the pupils of the school in a Nativity play, , ’■ The headmaster (Mr A. W. Pitt) said that the school had made excellent- progress. and the roll had Increased ’ considerably. Pupils from the school were very highly thought of when they passed on to other schools. Archbishop West-Watson, Primate of New Zealand, congratulated the school on its progress. Mr S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, associated himself with Dr. Hansen’s remarks about church schools. The dux medal was awarded to Donald Dennis. Mr H. A. H. Insull, headmaster of the Cathedral Grammar School, addressed the pupils of the Victory Scchool at the end-of-year service at St. Matthew’s Church. The vicar (the Rev. W. E. D. Davies) conducted the service, and presided at tne prize-giving ceremony. Dr. Hansen presented the prizes to the successful pupils.
