BRITISH FARMERS’ DELEGATION
PLANS FOR DOMINION VISITS LONDON. Oct. 27. The vice-president of the National Farmers’ Union (Mr James Turner), who is chairman of the union delegation which will be visiting Australia and New Zealand soon, said, in an interview, that the delegation’s principal objective was to establish contacts with Dominion farmers’ organisations and so prepare the ground for an Empire conference, which would be held in London as early as possible, perhaps in 1945. The delegation would not discuss policy, he added, but would engage in talks covering preliminary arrangements for collaboration in the solution of post-war agricultural problems. It was desired to get agreement among farmers’ organisations before a direct approach to the Government, when pressure could be applied by organisations on their individual Governments at the policy-forming stage. Other members of the delegation are Mr S. O. Ratcliffe. a former president of the National Farmers’ Union, Mr Giles Turner, a member of the National Farmers’ Union fruit committee, Mr Geoffrey Browne, the National Farmers’ Union economics officer. Mr William Young, vice-presi-dent of the Scottish Farmers’ Union, and Mr George Irvine, deputy-presi-dent of the Ulster Farmers’ Union.
