FISHING PROSPECTS

Sir, —An article appeared under North Canterbury notes on Tuesday, October 17, entitled “Fishing prospects considered good." From this one would consider the Ashley river would be a rendezvous for the wlelder of the lly. The local angler quoted said that the Ashley seemed to.be plentifully stocked. Fish had been seen rising well, especially at the mouth, and with the warmer weather fly fishermen could be assured of results. I would like to ask this local angler whatever gave him this idea. As one who has flyfished the Ashley for a number of years and studied the peculiarities of the river. I cannot swallow the bait. Any fly angler knows that be the weather hot or cold, fish could not be taken at the Ashley mouth on the fly. I am doubtful if any local fly angler would be prepared to make any statement on what he considered the prospects for the season, for so far river conditions have made this impossible. —Yours, etc., COLIN HOW.
