BUILDING PRIORITY

Sir, —I read with interest that Mr Semple assures us the new Christchurch railway- station ranks first on the building priority list. May I suggest that .in only a few years the new Itation will be a. white elephant through lack of population to utilise it fully, unless the Government pays more attention to essentials first and grandiose stations and post offices second. Karitane Hospital cannot yet cope with mothers, other than those who have delicate babies. There is yet no home or institution of any size for post-natal care of mothers, nor yet a rest-cure home for. over-worked, under-paid harassed mothers with young families. All hospitals are over-crowded. Meanwhile the Christchurch station serves its purpose. When it becomes over-crowded with mothers on holiday, that will be the time to consider reconstructing. Until then, it takes Russia to show our Government plain horse sense.
