HOSPITAL RATE

DIVERSION OF COUNTY

FUNDS

MANGONUI BOARD’S REQUEST (P.A.) WHANGAREI. Sept. 22. On the casting vote of the chairman, the Mangonui Hospital Board decided yesterday to invoke section 51 of the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act. 1926, by requesting the Minister of Finance to divert funds from the Mangonui County Council sufficient to cover contributions to hospital maintenance due from the council. This action was rendered necessary by the council’s refusal to include in the general rates struck this year the Hospital Board’s levy on the county of £4750, of which two instalments of £949 each were to have been paid in July and September. The procedure which the Mangonui Hospital Board has adopted was set out by the Minister of Health in a letter to the county council received at its meeting the previous day. Now working on an overdraft of £2OOO, the board has applied to its bankers for an overdraft of £6OOO for the quarter ending December.
