VICTORY LOAN

AIR FORCE DISPLAY , TODAY ‘ Air Force demonstrations in Cathedral square last evening to aid the Victory Loan campaign attracted widespread interest and many persons in the shopping area went to the Square to watch. The chief attraction was low flying by a number of aircraft which were picked up by a mobile searchlight as they swept over the city buildings. The pipe band from Wigram marched through the streets, and a concert programme was given near the Victory Loan Post Office. The concluding attraction of Air Force Week this afternoon will be the opening of the Royal Now Zealand Air Force station at Wigram to the public for the first time since the outbreak of war. A programme of flying exercises has been arranged and there will be many working exhibits. Reduced fares of 9d return have been arranged for tram trips to Sockburn. No cameras will be allowed on the station. The investment of £47.120 in the loan yesterday brought the district total to £1,264,415, which falls far short of the quota of £4,146,000. Only 10 days remain before the close of the campaign. WAR SACRIFICE

PROBLEM OF ACHIEVING EQUALITY

(P.A.) WELLINGTON. September 22. “Next to defeating the enemy, the most formidable war problem is to achieve equality of sacrifice by all sections of the community,” states the National War Loan Committee. “No plan can be evolved, however sincere the desire, which will adequately balance civilian sacrifice against the all out risks taken by our men of the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force. These gallant protectors of our liberties are young men, who normally would be able to look forward to a full life in which family joys would play a part. “Most of them have no financial reserves. Their resources are the potential achievements of a peace-time life, but they are now putting their full contribution into the pool. Thousands will, unfortunately, never enjoy the opportunity of living a full life. Their willingness to make this sacrifice makes our liberties and material assets secure. That is the human side of the war’s balance-sheet.

“A glance at the material side of the balance-sheet discloses a constantly improving financial position, with so large an accumulation that it constitutes a grave inflationary danger to New Zealand unless firmly controlled. The Victory Loan is one of the methods by which this can be safeguarded. At the cost of flesh and-blood these accumulations of wealth are made secure, but is this the moment,” asks the committee, “to withdraw them from the country’s war effort? If such a situation persists those who put prospective profits above their duty to the nation must take the consequences.”
