AMALGAMATION WITH CITY
♦- TWO PETITIONS GRANTED
M’CORMACK’S BAY AND HILLSBOROUGH
The commission which recently considered petitions for the amalgamation of certain areas with the city of Christchurch has recommended that the petitions of the residents-of part of Hillsborough and part of McCormack s Bay he granted, and the Christchurch City Council received advice from the Department of Internal Affairs yesterday that it has been decided to give effect to these recommendations. ; Consideration of the third petition investigated by t* l6 commission, that of residents of Galway avenue, has not yet been' completed. In its report to the Governor-Gen-eral/ the commission, comprising Messrs F. F. Reid, S.M. (chairman), T. W. Preston (Deputy Commissioner of Crown Lands), and R. J. Watson (District Land Valuer), states that there are 230 ratepayers in the area concerned in the Hillsborough petition. Of these, 140 signed the petition, and these comprise 90 per cent, of the actual residents. The commissioners express the opinion that although the area is in the main provided with reasonable services aporopriate .to such an area, it is suitable for and would benefit from municipal control in the future, ,• Referring to the finding of the commission on the McCormack’s Bay petition, the Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs (Mr J. W. Heenan) advises: “The vesting of the area concerned is a matter for negotiation between your council and the Sumner Borough Council and the Heathcote County Council. It is observed from the evidence that the local bodies concerned appear to be in accord with this question, and there should be'no difficulty in finalising arrangements.’’ ' -
