POPE AND ANGLICAN BISHOP
SPECULATION ON TALK IN r6me
(Rec. 9.30 p.tn.) NEW YORK. Aug. 13. The Associated Press reports that the Pope recently talked for 45 minutes with the Bishop of Lichfield (Dr. E. S. Woods). This is the first time the Pope has given a private audience to an Anglican bishop. .The Rome correspondent of the “New York Times” says it is believed that the Pope and the Bishop of Lichfield discussed the possible reunion of the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church. In view of the Bishop of Lichfield’s High Church predilection, it is thought he was chosen to seek once again common ground under which the fusion of the two Communions would be feasible. It is recalled that the father of the British Ambassador to the United States (Lord Halifax) and Cardinal Mercier sounded the possibilities together at the Malines conference, and during the last war Pope Benedict received a group of American clergy who favoured union.
