ARGENTINE MEAT CONTRACT

RENEWAL REPORTED UNLIKELY

ACTION BY ALLIED NATIONS

(Rec. 11.45 p.m.) NEW YORK. Aug. 13. “Argentine business and diplomatic circles have been given to understand that the British and American Governments have decided not to renew the United Nations meat contract with Argentina after its expiry on September 30,” says the Buenos Aires correspondent of the “New York HeraldTribune.”' “This is considered the most significant decision made by Britain and the United States since they suspended diplomatic relations with the Farrell Government, because meat is the most important single economic feature of Argentina’s relations with the rest of the world. “Large American and British companies in Argentina which export all the Argentine meat to the United Nations have been informed by the British and American Embassies that negotiations for a new contract could not possibly be held at present because of the lack of diplomatic relations, . .

“The contract signed by Britain on behalf of the United Nations provided for the purchase of all Argentina’s exportable meat. It was the biggest contract ever concluded by Argentina. In two years the United Nations have bought 1,200,000 tons of Argentine meat for soldiers and civilians.”
