MEAT COUPONS FOR ANIMALS
Sir,—My meat ration goes to London (I hope). The London Zoo is still functioning successfully, so says this morning’s paper. So is that in Wellington. When I leave home it is too early for liver, when I return, too late. I don’t wonder as humans are “powerful fond” of liver and bacon. According also to your paper cats are to keep rats from factories. They do! I live next to one. My old rat frightener now has to live on charity from a friend’s table. He can’t eat rats either and I can’t buy him scraps.—Yours; etc., „ „ ' CHARITY. May 31, 1944. Sir,—What are animals to do for food while the powers that be are taking so long to decide what they will do in the matter? We humans have numerous nourishing things to eat, and can thrive without meat, while it is essential for animals; it is their natural food. Cats and dogs have just as much right to live as some of your inhumane correspondents, and are of very much more importance to their owners than some of their critics are to anyone. I am still hoping to hear at an early date that these unfortunate creatures are provided for.—Yours, etc., THE ANIMALS’ FRIEND.
