CHARLESTON COAL

INCREASE IN DEMAND There is a steady increase in the demand for Charleston coal for household and heating plants in Wellington. and fleets of motor-lorries are engaged carrying the coal from Charleston to the railway sidings at Westport. At present only one ramp for the handling of this class of coal is in operation, and, being privately owned, the lorries in operation on the cartage of coal are not using the ramp. Another ramp is being erected near the old mill at the top end of Palmerston street, and when completed it will be possible to handle larger quantities of coal. As the exposed face of the coal has been taken away, the class of coal now being obtained from the seam is much superior to that which was shipped to the North Island when the initial shipments were made, and consumers are requesting repeat orders in larger quantities. Several waggons of this coal have also been railed to Christchurch. where there was a ready sale for it.
