ELECTION RESULTS
Sir.—l note with interest that the chairman of the Citizens’ Association says that the result of the municipal elections is due to “the people s decision to remove politics from municipal affairs,” while you hold the diametrically opposite view—that it is due to a desire to express dissatisfaction with the Labour Government. Probably Mr John Roberts is nearer the truth of the matter when he says that it is due to the habit that many people have of thinking with their stomachs. Yours, etc., Q T WILLIAMS. Kaiapoi, May 29, 1944. Sir,—At last tlie Labour Party knows what New Zealanders think of its ideas and practices, particularly of its bureaucratic and monopolistic control of everything. Its attempted strangula-tion-of the milk industry was a blessing in disguise, and did much to awaken many electors from their apathetic sleep. One can recollect a celebrated statesman quoting: “We have a mandate from the people.” Where is that so-called mandate now? In a few short years there will be another General Election. The time for it is now. Would the Government of New Zealand care to accept the challenge and face the electors while they are in their present frame of mind? When, the working people find that the Leader of the Opposition is a splendid leader, indefatigable and trustworthy, then and not before will New Zealand be a Dominion worth living in.—Yours, etc > MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN. Daniel VI, 25-28.. May 29, 1944. Sir,—Some few months ago Mr Fraser made a public statement to the effect that if he thought he had not the confidence of the majority of the people he would not remain in office a moment longer. In my opinion the local body election results amount to a vote of no-confidence in him and his gang of muddlers, and it remains to be seen if he is a man of his word. If they have the effrontery to remain in office after such a sweeping condemnation of their methods they brand themselves as a Government which is there solely to further the interests of a few watersiders and miners.—Yours, etc., C H May 29, 1944.
