Educationally Deficient Recruits hi U.S.—Rejections of men for the armed forces because of educational deficiencies are mure numerous than battle casualties, reports a Selective Service bulletin. The number of educationally deficient registrants is 240,000. compared with War casualties, 201,000. Washington, March 28. £19,000 Kept Under Bed: Stolen.— A thief stole £19,000 in cash from an unlocked attache case under a man’s bed on Saturday night. The money belonged to Alfred Basset, aged 38 years, a retired investor and property owner. He had kept it under his bed for 12 months and he intended to. distribute it among his seven sons and daughters. The money was in bundles of banknotes of high denominations, saved by Mr Basset during the last 10 years. He believed that the attache case was safe. The thief is believed to have entered the house while the family were having the evening meal.— Sydney, May 29.
