APPLICATION FOR STATE HOUSE
Sir,— Nearly five years ago I applied for a State house and at intervals have renewed my application without results. Finally, I.wrote to Mr Macfarlane, Labour member ipr this district, and later to Mr Andrews. The result was a reply from Mr Andrews, who I understand answers all correspondence, and although he could do nothing for me, he did give me courage, hope and courtesy, Mr Mac'farlane, however, ignored my letter. I realise these men are busy, but that does not alter the fact that I am. still living with my child in one room, while my husband is away serving his country. In conclusion, I can thank God that this is a free country, and on Saturday I shall be free to vote for what I consider principle and not camouflage.— Yours, etc., . HOMELESS HECTOR. May 24, 1944. ["The origin of an anonymous letter in such terms at this particular time must be suspect," said Mr Macfarlane when this letter was referred to him. "I have received many letters about houses, and as far as I am aware I have done my best for the writers and have acknowledged the letters, but as no name has been given, I cannot say if this particular person did receive a reply or replies from me. However, the mere fact that Mr Andrews's name has been dragged in suggests that the letter has a political purpose."]
