Newman .. •• 9UU CHANGE OF CONTROL IN WANGANUI ( PA) WANGANUI, May 28. In Wanganui, the Hon. W. J. Rogers MLC' the sitting Mayor, sponsored bv the Labour Party, was returned with a majority of 937, votes, defeating the Citizens' Association candidate, Dr G. J. Adams. Mr Rogers polled 5647 votes and Dr. Adams 4710. Control of the Wanganui City Council has passed from tlw Labour Party to the Citizens' Association, eight Citizens' and four Labour candidates having been elected. With a Labour Mayor, who -has.a casting vote as well as a deliberative vote, the Citizens' councillors can count on a majority of at least two on allconSheflocal bodies control reis in the hands of ani-Labour members. A feature of the cil election was the defeat of the deDutv Mayor (Mr J. J. Scott), who can Ep ranked next to Mr Rogers and Mr j e ß Cotterm as the most prominent Labour figure in tire city.

Seven new members ’ were elected to the Timaru Borough Coun* cil, only three of the old council standing for re-election. Mr C. E Thomson polled best of the 19 candidates The proposed transfer of portion of the Maori Park Reserve to be used as a new site for the Technical College was defeated by 500 votes.
