MILK COMMISSION’S REPORT
Sir,—Your correspondents on the above matter should read the report and then offer some intelligent' criticism, if they find any reason for criticism. I am willing to show the evidence and reports on which the commission's findings are based to any reputable person or organisation.— Yours, etc., G. W. DELL. April 5, 1944. Sir,—The commission, including Mr Dell, has missed the vital point about the milk supply. No matter what processes it has to go through before reaching the consumer, it must first be produced. The commission has done very little t place production on a payable basis; and unless this is done there 'will be less mill? to be handled by the milk council, and less to be consumed. At present costs, the producer should receive at least Is 2d a gallon; and this is the logical place to start. First ensure an adequate supply of milk to be processed.—Yours, etc., J. E. ROYDS. April 5, 1944. Sir,—Mrs Crowley asks when the voice of the Labour Party in recent years has been raised against conditions in the milk industry. Your correspondent must either have a short memory or has only just recently taken an interest in civic affairs. In 1929 our party fought the municipal election in Christchurch on the issue of a municipal milk supply. In every succeeding election we have drawn attention to the unsatisfactory nature of the milk supply in Christchurch. In view of the publicity given to speakers at the recent public meeting organised by the Consumers' League and Fresh Milk Association it would be interesting to know what the membership of the Consumers' League is and if membership is confined to consumers. While everyone is a consumer, it would appear from reports of the Consumers' League meetings that milkmen play a very prominent part. -Yours, etc., ROBERTS< April 5, 1944.
