FIRE AT TIMARU

SLIGHT DAMAGE TO HOUSE Prompt action by two lads helped to avert more serious damage to a house at 63 Wai-iti road, Timaru, yesterday, when an electric iron left switched on caused the furniture to catch fire. Shortly before 4.30 o’clock m the afternoon, two boys, D. Salvesen and J. Stevenson, noticed smoke coming out of the house which was let by the owner, Mr J. Marra. Climbing in through a window of the house, they gave the alarm to the Timaru Fire Brigade, and started to put out the fire in the kitchen with buckets of water. Two engines of the brigade arrived shortly after, and the fire was soon under control. The doorpost and wall of the kitchen were slightly burnt as well as a cushion and a small chair on which the iron was left.
